PE
Intent
At Ruswarp C of E Primary School, our intent for Physical Education (PE) is to provide a high-quality,
inclusive, and inspiring curriculum that fosters a lifelong love of physical activity and healthy lifestyles
among all our pupils.
We strive to:
- Promote Physical Literacy: Develop fundamental movement skills and physical competencies that empower children to participate confidently and competently in a wide range of physical activities and sports.
- Encourage Personal and Social Development: Instil important life skills such as teamwork,
resilience, and sportsmanship through collaborative play, competition, (both intra and inter house
competition with the local sports partnership), and reflection. - Acknowledge Diversity and Inclusion: Foster an environment where every child, regardless of
ability or background, feels valued and is given the opportunity to thrive in PE activities. - Support Academic Achievement: Integrate physical activity with academic learning to enhance
concentration, engagement, and overall well-being, contributing positively to educational outcomes. - Engage with the Community: Develop partnerships with local sports clubs, (these include Whitby
Cricket Club, Whitby Golf Club and the Whitby Wizards Basketball Club) and organisations to
promote pathways for children to engage in activities beyond the school environment, thus
strengthening community ties. - Foster Spiritual Development: Incorporate moments of reflection and mindfulness within PE
lessons to enhance pupils’ spiritual well-being, encouraging an appreciation for inner peace, self awareness, and the connection to others through activity. - Embed British Values: Promote fundamental British values through PE, encouraging respect,
democracy, and tolerance, while fostering a sense of belonging and community among pupils from diverse backgrounds.
Implementation
To achieve our intent, we have designed a PE curriculum that is rich, varied, and engaging, ensuring that it meets the needs of all children. Our implementation approach includes:
- Curriculum Design: A well-structured and sequenced curriculum based on the National Curriculum for PE, delivering a breadth of activities including games, gymnastics, dance, athletics, and outdoor education. Our curriculum is regularly reviewed to reflect current trends and innovations in sports and physical activity.
- Skilled Delivery: All PE lessons are led by qualified teachers and, where appropriate, specialists,
ensuring high-quality instruction and a deep knowledge of physical education. Continuous professional development (CPD) is provided for staff to refine their skills and stay updated on best practices. - Assessment and Feedback: Regular formative assessments are integrated into lessons to identify strengths and areas for improvement. Peer and self-assessment techniques empower children to take ownership of their learning and progress.
- Extra-Curricular Opportunities: A rich programme of after-school clubs and inter-school competitions broadens access to physical activities, catering for a range of interests and abilities, thereby increasing participation rates.
- Health Education: Integration of health education into the curriculum ensures children understand the importance of physical activity and healthy eating, providing them with knowledge to make informed lifestyle choices.
- Mindfulness Practices: Incorporate mindfulness and reflection activities during PE lessons that encourage spiritual growth, such as guided breathing exercises or nature walks, fostering a sense of calmness and connectedness among pupils.
Impact
The impact of our PE curriculum at Ruswarp, is evident in several key outcomes:
- Increased Participation: We have seen a significant rise in the number of children participating in
regular physical activities, both in and outside of school, evidenced through participation data and
pupil surveys. - Improved Physical Competence: Assessments demonstrate that the majority of our pupils are
meeting or exceeding expected standards in key areas of physical literacy, showcasing their ability to apply skills in diverse contexts. - Enhanced Well-being: Our commitment to a holistic approach promotes not only physical health
but also emotional and social well-being. Pupil feedback indicates increased enjoyment and
confidence in physical activities. - Fostering Lifelong Habits: Through our community engagement initiatives, many pupils are
actively continuing their participation in sports and physical activities beyond the school
environment, creating pathways for lifelong engagement in health and fitness. - Positive School Culture: PE plays a significant role in developing a positive school culture where
respect, inclusion, and achievement are celebrated. Pupils exhibit collaboration, fairness, and
kindness during sporting activities, reflecting our school values. - Spiritual Awareness: Through our mindfulness practices, pupils report a greater sense of self awareness and peace, enhancing their spiritual well-being and ability to reflect on their experiences.
- Promotion of British Values: Our PE curriculum actively encourages respect and teamwork,
helping pupils to understand the importance of democratic principles and community cohesion,
fostering a sense of responsibility and citizenship.
We commit to a quality PE provision that not only fosters physical development but also nurtures the whole child, preparing them for a healthy and active future.
