Music: Intent, Impact and Implementation Statement
Intent
At Ruswarp, we aim to provide a high-quality music education that engages and inspires all pupils, fostering a lifelong love for music. Our curriculum is designed to develop pupils’ musical skills, creativity, and appreciation of diverse musical genres and traditions. We strive to create an inclusive environment where every child, regardless of their background or ability, can participate actively in music-making.
Our music programme aims to:
- Develop skills: We intend for pupils to acquire and develop a broad range of musical skills,
including singing, playing instruments, composing, and responding to music critically. - Promote creativity: We seek to nurture pupils’ creative potential through opportunities for
improvisation and composition, encouraging them to express themselves uniquely and confidently. - Foster cultural awareness: We incorporate a wide array of musical styles from various cultures
and traditions, promoting an understanding and appreciation of the global landscape of music. - Enhance personal and social skills: Our music curriculum aims to build teamwork,
communication, and social skills through collaborative music-making experiences, including
ensemble performance and group projects. - Encourage spiritual growth: Through music, we promote reflection and emotional expression,
allowing pupils to explore their values, beliefs, and connections to the wider world, fostering a sense of spirituality and personal growth. - Promote British Values: Our music curriculum embraces British values, such as mutual respect
and tolerance, by encouraging pupils to appreciate and celebrate the diversity of musical traditions in Britain, engaging in discussions around social harmony and cultural identity.
Implementation
Music is woven into the fabric of our school’s curriculum through the following key strategies:
1. Comprehensive Curriculum: Our music curriculum follows the National Curriculum guidelines
while also being tailored to meet the unique needs and interests of our pupils. We ensure a
progressive and coherent learning journey from Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) through Key
Stage 2.
2. Quality Teaching: Our music provision is delivered by skilled practitioners, including specialist
music teachers who are passionate about music education. Teachers are provided with ongoing
professional development to enhance their knowledge and pedagogical techniques.
3. Active Learning: Pupils engage in active music-making through singing worships, instrumental
lessons provided by the WOPs, and participation in school performances. We encourage hands-on
learning, enabling all students to explore a variety of instruments and styles.
4. Cross-Curricular Links: Music is integrated with other subjects, such as history and literacy, to
provide contextual learning experiences. We aim to create projects that connect music with relevant
themes, fostering a deeper understanding of subject matter.
5. Performance Opportunities: We offer numerous opportunities for pupils to perform, both within the school and in the community. These include school concerts, talent shows, and collaborations with local arts organisations, promoting confidence and a sense of achievement.
6. Assessment and Feedback: Regular formative assessments are conducted to ensure that all
pupils are making progress. Feedback is given to children in a constructive manner, guiding their
musical journey and celebrating their achievements.
Impact
The effectiveness of our music programme is evaluated through various measures, evidencing the positive impact on our pupils:
- Skill Acquisition: Pupils demonstrate improved musical skills and knowledge, with many achieving proficiency in playing instruments and contributing to class performances.
- Engagement and Enjoyment: Pupil voice surveys indicate high levels of engagement and
enjoyment in music lessons. Children express confidence in their musical abilities and a strong
desire to participate in extracurricular music activities. - Social Development: Collaborative projects and performances have fostered strong relationships amongst pupils, enhancing their teamwork and social interaction skills.
- Cultural Appreciation: Through exposure to diverse musical traditions, pupils reflect an increased
awareness of different cultures, fostering empathy and respect for others within the school
community. - Spiritual and Emotional Growth: Pupils report a deeper connection to their emotions and a
greater understanding of their identities, enhancing their overall wellbeing and spiritual awareness. - Academic Performance: Evidence suggests a positive correlation between music education and
overall academic performance, with many pupils displaying enhanced concentration and
communication skills.
By implementing a robust music education programme, we aim to equip our pupils with the skills, knowledge, and passion for music that will not only enrich their lives but also empower them as contributing members of society.
