Computing
Intent
At Ruswarp C of E Primary School, our intent for computing education is to equip every child with the
knowledge, skills, and understanding necessary to thrive in an increasingly digital world. We aim to foster a love for Computing, encouraging curiosity and creativity while preparing pupils to develop logical reasoning and problem-solving abilities.
Our curriculum is designed to ensure:
- A Broad and Balanced Curriculum: We aim to give pupils an in-depth understanding of key computing concepts, including programming, online safety, digital literacy, and the use of technology in various contexts.
- Relevance to Real-World Applications: The computing curriculum is linked to everyday experiences and the future workplace, ensuring that children recognise the importance of these skills beyond the classroom.
- Inclusivity: We strive to adapt our curriculum to meet the diverse needs of all learners, promoting equal opportunities and ensuring that every pupil, regardless of their background, is confident and capable in Computing.
- Cross-Curricular Links: computing is integrated across various subjects, enhancing the overall learning experience and allowing pupils to see the interconnectedness of knowledge.
- Spirituality and British Values: Our curriculum promotes understanding and respect for British values, including democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect. Through computing, pupils engage in activities that celebrate diverse cultural perspectives in technology, fostering a sense of belonging and spiritual growth.
Implementation
Our Computing curriculum is implemented through a collaborative and engaging approach, consisting of the following key components:
- Structured Curriculum: Our Computing curriculum is based on the national curriculum and supplemented with high-quality resources, ensuring that all key concepts are effectively taught. Units are carefully sequenced to build on prior knowledge and skills progressively.
- Hands-On Learning Opportunities: We provide a range of practical activities, including programming robots, developing digital artwork, and producing multimedia projects. This hands-on approach allows pupils to apply concepts in real-world scenarios.
- Teach Digital Citizenship: We place significant emphasis on online safety and ethical use of technology. Pupils are taught to be responsible digital citizens, understanding how to protect themselves and others in the digital world.
- Professional Development for Staff: Continuous professional development is provided for teachers to ensure they are confident and competent in delivering all aspects of the Computing curriculum. This may include training sessions, access to resources, and collaborative planning time.
- Assessment and Feedback: We utilise formative and summative assessment strategies to monitor pupil progress. Regular feedback is given to pupils, enabling them to reflect on their learning and set personal goals.
Impact
The impact of our Computing curriculum is evident in several key areas:
- Pupil Progress and Attainment: Pupils demonstrate high levels of engagement and achievement in computing, with assessment data indicating that the vast majority of pupils meet or exceed expected standards by the end of Key Stage 2.
- Skills for the Future: Pupils leave Ruswarp School equipped with a robust set of computing skills, ready to engage confidently and competently with the technology they will encounter in their future academic and professional lives.
- Positive Attitudes Towards Learning: Observations demonstrate that pupils enjoy computing lessons and actively seek opportunities to further their understanding. They are keen to share their knowledge with peers and explore new technologies.
- Responsible Digital Citizens: Pupils demonstrate a clear understanding of online safety and ethical technology use, contributing to a safer school environment in the digital realm.
- Respect for Diversity and British Values: Pupils develop an appreciation for the diverse cultural dimensions of technology and actively engage in discussions that promote mutual respect, fostering a community spirit that reflects British values.
- Spiritual Awareness: Pupils reflect on the impact of technology on society and their personal lives, developing a sense of responsibility and spiritual awareness regarding their use of digital tools in a global context.
